Mesh count is one of the most important — and most misunderstood — parts of screen printing. Getting it right is the difference between a crisp print and a blotchy mess. Here's a clear guide.
What Is Mesh Count?
Mesh count is the number of threads per inch in your screen's mesh. A lower count has bigger holes (more ink passes through); a higher count has smaller holes (less ink, finer detail).
Low Mesh Count (40–86)
- More ink passes through.
- Best for: bold designs, thick inks, and printing on dark fabrics where you need opacity.
Medium Mesh Count (110–160)
- The all-rounder range — the most popular for beginners.
- Best for: general T-shirt printing and most designs.
High Mesh Count (200+)
- Less ink, finer detail.
- Best for: fine lines, detailed artwork, halftones, and printing on paper.
Matching Mesh to Ink
- Thick inks (plastisol, on dark fabric): lower mesh count.
- Thin inks & fine detail: higher mesh count.
- Water-based on light fabric: medium-high.
A Simple Rule of Thumb
If you're just starting and printing T-shirts, a 110 mesh count is the best all-purpose choice. Add lower and higher counts as your projects vary.
